Welcome to Destiny Islands: the tropical island paradise that our main protagonist calls home. Walk up to Kairi and talk to her; she will ask Sora to gather these supplies for the raft:

Sparring with Tidus, Selphie, Wakka

While gathering all of the raft supplies, you can spar with the kids around the island to get accustomed to the game's battle mechanics. Each match-up requires a different strategy and provides an opportunity for early EXP.

Tidus is located on the wooden deck on the far edge of the island; talk to him and choose to begin sparring.

Tidus

HP: 60      EXP: 2      DIFFICULTY:

Tidus's method of attack is striking with his wooden stick at close range. As he comes in for the swing, run to the sides to evade. Just after his swing, strike three times, then run away to give him some space to repeat the process. You can deflect his horizontal slash attack with a well-timed swing to gain +2 technique points. If you stay too close to Tidus, he may somersault and strike you at close range; if this happens, give Tidus more space.

Selphie is located on the wooden pier along the beach; talk to her and choose to begin sparring.

Selphie

HP: 45      EXP: 1      DIFFICULTY:

Selphie attacks with her jump rope; you can run around her in wide circles to avoid being hit. Strike her three times just after she swings her jump rope at you. If you run away from Selphie, she may leap forward and strike; if you time your attack just after she lands, you can deflect her jump rope for +2 technique points; doing this repeatedly will allow you to quickly level up a few times without ending the fight.

Wakka is located near the wooden shack by the waterfall; speak to him and choose to begin sparring.

Wakka

HP: 75      EXP: 1      DIFFICULTY:

Wakka throws his blitzball to deal damage to you. If you attack just before Wakka's blitzball hits you, you can deflect it back and receive +1 technique points. If you lock-on to Wakka and send one of his blitzballs back at him, you may daze him and leave him open to attacks for several seconds. While dazed, Wakka will still throw blitzballs erratically. Land three hits while he's dazed, then back away and repeat the process. Alternatively, you can send his erratic bliztballs back at him for more damage by jumping and timing your swings.

After you have successfully defeated Tidus, Selphie, and Wakka in one-on-one matches, you can speak with Tidus to start a three-on-one match.

Tidus + Selphie + Wakka

HP: 180      EXP: 4      DIFFICULTY:

This match can be tough! Try to keep distance between you and the kids; if they surround you, it's difficult to keep track of incoming attacks. If you can manage to lock-on to Tidus or Sephie, you can time your sword swings to send Wakka's blitzball at the locked-on target and daze them for a short time. With one of them dazed, you can attack the other relentlessly (while avoiding Wakka's blitzballs), until only two remain. You can repeat this process until only one remains.

REWARD:  Potion

Sparring with Riku

You can also spar with Riku, located on the small island connected by the wooden bridge.

Riku

HP: 90      EXP: 5      DIFFICULTY:

Riku does not stagger when you strike him, so it's best to stay just out of reach and strike him once just after he swings his sword. After Riku has taken four hits, he will fall on his back and kick up with his legs; this attack is very powerful, so run to either side to avoid damage. Riku will perform this attack after every fourth hit he takes; when Riku's HP is almost depleted, he will start use the kick attack more often.

REWARD:  Potion

Return to Kairi

When you have finished gathering provisions and no longer wish to spar, talk to Kairi. If you managed to gather all of the raft supplies without asking Kairi for instructions twice, she will give Sora a Hi-Potion. Kairi will ask Sora if he's finished; when you're ready, select "Yeah, let's go."

Racing Riku in the Cove

There is a door located behind the place Kairi was standing at yesterday that leads to the cove. Go through this door and talk to Riku; he will be standing nearby. Riku challenges Sora to a race.

If Sora wins this race, your Gummi Ship will be named whatever you choose at this time (the default is "Excalibur"). If you lose the race, the Gummi Ship will be named "Highwind."

Race Against Riku

This race can be won using different paths and methods; however, the strategy outlined here seems to give Sora the greatest advantage when done correctly. Start by following Riku's path along the broken wooden bridge sections. A part of the second section of bridge will collapse when stepped on; try to time your steps and jump so that Riku falls below. After clearing the bridge, jump onto the ladder and climb up to the top of the platform (preventing Riku from doing so).

Jump toward the zip line to use it; wait until fully stopped to drop down, then very carefully jump along the treetops to reach the star. You will need to jump toward the star to light it. Jump along the treetops along the rock wall to reach a leafy platform leading back to the broken bridge; run and jump across the bridge sections to finish the race.

REWARD:  Pretty Stone

More Raft Supplies

After the race, talk to Kairi (found near the raft on the shoreline) to receive the list of remaining provisions needed for the raft:

Your First Accessory

You can find your first accessory in the cove. Carry the wooden create near the zip line and drop it along the rock wall, then jump on it to reach the ledge above; the chest within the cave contains a Protect Chain.

You can continue to spar with Selphie, Tidus, and Wakka if you wish. You can also choose to race Riku again; you will receive a Pretty Stone for every victory.

Pretty Stones do not have a use in the game, other than being sold for 30 Munny. However, for completionists and perfectionists, repeating this race is the only way to obtain 99 Pretty Stones in the game.

Return to Kairi

When you have gathered all of the raft provisions and no longer wish to spar, return to Kairi (near the raft in the cove) and talk to her. If you retrieved all provisions without asking Kairi for instructions twice, she will give Sora a Hi-Potion. Kairi will ask if Sora wants to return home; if you're ready, choose "Yeah, it's getting late."

Finding Riku on the Island

Don't bother to attacking the creatures just yet, as your wooden sword deals virtually no damage at all. Make your way to the wooden shed near the waterfall. Save your game at the save station inside the shed, then climb the stairs and cross the wooden bridge. After his encounter with Riku, Sora will acquire the Keyblade.

Find Kairi in the Secret Place

Now that you have the Keyblade, you are able to defeat the creatures more easily. Each enemy yields 1 EXP upon defeat, so you may choose to continue fighting them in order to level up. When you're ready to proceed, make your way to the secret place next to the waterfall; you should see the door from the dream sequence.

Travel through the door and into the secret place. Sora will find Kairi standing near the mysterious door, which suddenly bursts open. Kairi is thrown towards Sora and disappears just as they make contact. Sora is cast out of the secret place onto what is left of the islands.

Darkside

HP: 300      EXP: 60      DIFFICULTY:

This battle is almost exactly the same as your first encounter with Darkside, with one extra attack: Darkside will plunge an arm into the ground, causing a tremor (jump over it to avoid damage). Darkside will then hoist a small ball of energy into the air and rain smaller energy orbs from the sky; you will need to stay on the move to avoid damage. Darkside is vulnerable at its hands and head. When Darkside slams its fist into the ground, lock on and attack its lowered hand. While its hand is touching the ground, you can jump up its arm and strike its head for extra technique points.

When Darkside slams its fist into the ground, you can attack its lowered hand. While the enemy's hand is touching the ground, you have the opportunity to jump up its arm and strike its head for extra technique points. Destroy the smaller Shadow enemies to release HP orbs if your HP starts to get low. When Darkside projects homing lasers from its chest, you can time your attacks to send the lasers back at it's head for extra technique points (just be sure to lock on to its head before attempting).
